Choosing your fertility doctor is one of the most important decisions you will make as you start your journey. Knowing what you want is key. Follow this checklist to help make the right decision for you.
Interview you doctor: Feeling supported by your fertility doctor in your journey is key to building trust and a successful partnership with your physician. Make sure to discuss your questions, concerns, timeline and treatment options to help you achieve your family goals.
Doctor and care team: Each fertility center operates differently from the next. If it is important for you to see your fertility doctor at each appointment, make sure to ask if your physician will be present. Many fertility centers schedule certain appointments such as ultrasounds and blood work with a member of their care team and offer streamlined communication through their patient portal. Working with a care team can make it easier to communicate as doctors' schedules can be very restrictive. There is no right or wrong way - it all depends on your personal preferences, so make sure to ask how your clinic operates.
Appointment times: Scheduling appointments around your busy life can be challenging. Some fertility centers offer early morning appointments for ultrasounds and bloodwork with their technicians and phlebotomists starting as early as 6:30 am. The results are often read by your physician later in the day with a follow up call provided by a member of your care team. This is perfect if you want to be in and out before the working day begins. Clinics that have their physicians perform the ultrasounds generally do not offer these early morning appointments. Make sure to discuss appointment times with your fertility doctor to find the best center that fits your schedule.
